Types of UPVC Door Hinges
uPVC doors may become loose in the hinges because of continual wear and tear. The door must be perfectly aligned to operate effectively and minimize draughts or leaks.
Knowing the types of uPVC door hinges and how to adjust them will help you buy a perfect hinge to replace an already existing hinge.
Three types of uPVC door hinges
uPVC Butt Hinges
Butt hinges are the type of hinges fitted to the door at the edge, as opposed to flag hinges that are fitted to the side of the door.
Butt hinges are usually found on older doors but are not limited to them only; you can find them on some new doors too.
uPVC Flag Hinges
As mentioned above, flag hinges are fitted to the side of the door. The flag hinges are known to be found more on new doors.
uPVC Rebated Hinges
Rebated hinges are fitted into a rebate, or groove, on the door. These hinges are hard to find in the market but are possible.
How to identify uPVC door hinges?
The three types of hinges primarily differ in how they are fitted to the door. If you want to replace a uPVC door hinge, it is important to identify the right type of hinge that meets your needs.
The easiest way to identify a uPVC door hinge is by looking at the existing hinges on your door. For example, if you have butt hinges, they will be fitted to the edge. Otherwise, the new hinge may not fit properly to the door or may not work properly.
Once identified the hinge, ensure that you measure its size to buy a suitable replacement.
How to adjust a uPVC door that has dropped?
Over time, uPVC doors tend to drop with time. They occasionally demand maintenance and adjustments. If your door is dragging, you will hear a squeaking and cracking sound while opening and closing the door.
Some ways to fix this include:
- The screws on the door side of the hinge can be adjusted using the Allen Key.
- Despite this, if the door still dangles, turn the screws twice clockwise and adjust the hinges until the door opens and closes properly.
- If this does not work and the door still drops, take help from a professional locksmith.
Adjust the door height
You can level the door by following the steps below:
- Ensure that the door is leveled and check its alignment. Adjust the hinges to meet the door level.
- Check the seal around the door’s edge once it is leveled. Fill up if there are any gaps with sealants.
uPVC door compression adjustment
When a uPVC door separates from the frame, it develops compression. It can be corrected by adjusting the door hinges.
- Use a compression adjustment screw to tighten the hinges. Based on the hinge style, this screw is either top or bottom screw on the hinge.
- To securely fasten the door to the frame, tighten the compression adjustment screw using an Allen key.
- Contact a locksmith if the problem still needs to be solved.
